Feedback from Luxstorm: Thanks for asking Cam.

Firstly it’s probably worth making a distinction between ‘high key’ lighting which is totally dominated by bright tones and an ‘isolated’ image where a white background has been lit, or over lit, to give a pure white background.

High key images evoke a happy, bright and cheery feel and are often associated with fashion images or images of children.

You need at least two lights – one for subject (main light), and one for background. Turn on the main light only and set the exposure you require for your model, then put the background light(s) on – these are going to be set higher than the main light (around a stop or two above).

Take some test shots keeping your apeture / speed settings unchanged but tweak the background light to get the effect you want – ie isolated/blown out or a bright white (you’ll see the difference in the histogram or highlight alert flashing).

Try moving the model closer to the background to get more ‘light spill’ into the hair, or move further away for a more traditional hi-key image. If necessary use a reflector or another light to throw light back onto the model.

Hope this helps.
